Living At Hopton Cottage

Hopton Cottage Care Home is not like any other residential care home. There are 50 ground floor cottages and the home is split into 3 distinct neighbourhoods for people with no memory problems, early stage dementia and more advanced dementia. We feel it is important for people to live with like-minded fellow residents receiving the right amount of care and support they need.

You keep your independence, living your life as you would at home, with the reassurance of kind, highly trained staff on hand to offer as much help as you need.

Your views about every aspect of your care are vital in helping us to provide a service that is as individually tailored to your needs as possible, so we regularly seek your ideas in formal surveys as well as through informal chats. Some of our best ideas have come from those living here!

Lauder neighbourhood (our specialist unit) includes 10 first floor rooms and is specifically for people with a dementia, with extra, expertly trained staff providing specialist care. We offer comfort, understanding and a safe environment, whilst enabling people with a dementia to live as happy and independent a life as possible.

We can offer you your own cottage-style room with your own private garden and luxury ensuite bathroom. Our rooms are spacious and light. Your room will have a queen sized bed with luxury quilted memory foam mattress and fine oak furniture. You will have space to eat and relax, and plenty of room to welcome friends and family.

Every ground floor cottage has its own patio garden with access through an ‘easy push’ door. All cottages have a personal telephone and if you live locally you can even keep your number. All care home cottage rooms have full broadband internet access and digital television and radio. Additionally, you can choose to have your favourite pay channels like Sky Sports or Sky Movies.

We have designated activity staff who work with each individual to provide fun and engaging activities and events. The residential home has stunning landscaped gardens and wonderful lounges with views across the countryside of Huddersfield and Wakefield or gardens and access to sheltered outside seating areas.

We provide a safe, comfortable, happy and homely environment where people have a sense of belonging and are valued as unique individuals.

Our Food

Like the rest of our service and facilities, our food is both extremely important and of a very high standard. Far above what you might see in many traditional care homes.

We provide a first class and varied menu at Hopton Cottage Care Home with fresh, high quality, locally sourced ingredients. No expense is spared in making fantastic, freshly prepared meals you love. We cater for all different tastes and dietary requirements including vegetarians, diabetics, and lactose and gluten intolerance.

Some of our suppliers are Ramsdens high quality butchers of Mirfield, J. W. Gibb & Sons Hill Top Farm Shop of Kirkheaton and Total Food Service based in Huddersfield. We like to shop locally for fresh and regionally produced ingredients.

We have a very generous budget for food and you can eat what you like, when you like it, either in our spacious dining areas or in the privacy of your own cottage room. If you have friends or family coming to visit from afar then just let us know and they can have whatever they like to eat and drink with you.

Activities & Events

At Hopton Cottage care home activities and events are a key part of the care we provide. The home has its own dedicated activity coordinators who are especially devoted to organising a range of stimulating and engaging activities and events.

We provide individually tailored activities for each person who uses our service alongside a wide range of social activities and events that are available to everyone. We want life in our home to be as active and engaging as you want it to be.

Our activities are inspired by you, whether these are lifelong interests or the wish to discover new ones. Whether you enjoy drawing, painting, poetry, jigsaw puzzles, bridge, gardening and horticulture, relaxing in the garden or chats over coffee, our care home can provide mentally stimulating activities as well as physical games.

We have coffee mornings for family and friends to come along, knitting club, trips to the park and museums and walks along the canal. Movie nights, quiz nights and bingo.

If you like dogs then Suzanne’s dog Dolly will be a hit with you – she just loves attention. Whatever you enjoy, you can enjoy it at Hopton Cottage Care Home.

History of The Home

For many years Mirfield in Wakefield had a reputation for being a railway town with many residents earning a living through the railway or associated industries. The railway came to Mirfield in 1840 with the Manchester to Leeds line. Hopton Care Cottages, care homes, is built on a site that originally housed engine sheds and at one time 200 men were employed here

The nursing home – Hopton Care Cottages was designed by Kevin and Joseph Martin, and is based on their many years of experience providing high quality care. We wanted to offer far more than a room in a building, hence designed individual cottage rooms with private patio gardens and luxury ensuite bathrooms. The home has stunning communal gardens and wonderful lounges with views across the countryside or gardens.

Hopton Care Cottages was such a different type of care home that we decided we wanted to build it ourselves. So, we set up with our highly skilled and experienced builder Mr Ash Goodes. Ash only builds high quality buildings and no cost cutting is tolerated!

Having our own construction company has made sure we got exactly the design we wanted, with the highest quality materials and workmanship, from natural stone right through to luxury furnishings and fittings such as Velfac windows and patio doors. We are sure you will like the result!
